Beyond Meat is now broadening its product line with a new collection called Phytosphere, a move that signals the company’s intention to prioritize functional nutrition over its traditional focus on meat alternatives. The rebranded firm, now operating as Beyond The Plant Protein Company, is entering categories such as protein powders, ready-to-drink beverages, and savory snacks—segments where products offering multiple health benefits are increasingly in demand.
The Phytosphere lineup debuts today with three standout offerings. The first is Beyond Starmatter, a protein powder that delivers 20 grams of plant protein, 5 grams of fiber, and a proprietary mix of probiotics, phytonutrients, and adaptogens per serving. Available in Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Strawberry Banana, and Plain, each flavor is designed to support muscle recovery, digestive health, and immune function. The formulation aligns with current consumer preferences for supplements that combine protein with additional wellness attributes.
Another introduction is Beyond Starcut, a plant-based jerky bar crafted from mycelium that provides 17 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber without added sugars or cholesterol. The bars come in Asada Style, Classic Dill, and Spicy Southwest BBQ, catering to the rising interest in high-protein, savory snacks. Unlike conventional jerky, these bars contain no antibiotics or hormones, positioning them as a cleaner option for health-focused consumers.

The third product in the Phytosphere series is Beyond Veggie, a burger patty made from over ten fruit and vegetable ingredients, legumes, seeds, and polyphenols. Each patty contains 12 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber, along with iron, potassium, and magnesium. Flavors include Spiced Chickpea and Chipotle Black Bean, offering a more plant-forward alternative to the company’s earlier meat-like formulations.
Beyond’s shift from meat to wellness nutrition
Also now part of the Phytosphere portfolio is Beyond Immerse, a line of sparkling protein drinks launched earlier this year. Flavors such as Peach Mango, Strawberry Lemonade, and Cherry Berry have already entered the market, targeting the rapidly expanding functional beverage sector, which is expected to surpass $200 billion globally within the next five years. These drinks merge protein with lively fruit flavors, appealing to consumers who seek both nutrition and ease of consumption.
The company’s strategic shift comes amid challenges in the plant-based meat sector. Recent financial disclosures revealed declining demand in U.S. retail and foodservice channels, though sales of burger and chicken products showed improvement in Europe and Canada. CEO Ethan Brown characterized the results as demonstrating “directional progress” while stressing the need to stabilize core operations and explore faster-growing adjacent markets.
This approach parallels trends observed in other plant-based brands, many of which have expanded their portfolios to reduce dependence on meat alternatives—a category now facing stagnation due to economic pressures and evolving consumer priorities. The move also capitalizes on the growing popularity of functional foods, where protein powders and fortified beverages are gaining ground as shoppers prioritize both nutritional value and convenience.

New products redefine plant-based protein market
All Phytosphere products are available today through online channels, alongside the company’s newly refreshed website for Beyond Plant Protein. The launch represents a deliberate departure from Beyond’s earlier emphasis on hyper-realistic meat substitutes, instead framing the brand as a broader leader in plant-based nutrition solutions.
Beyond’s financial performance in the first quarter of 2024 showed a 12% decline in revenue compared to the same period last year, though the company attributed this to strategic cost adjustments rather than market failure.
Online pre-orders for the Phytosphere collection have already exceeded expectations, with the protein powder and sparkling drinks generating the most interest. The company plans to expand distribution to retail partners in the coming months, ensuring wider accessibility for consumers seeking plant-based nutrition solutions.
