The repetition of the picture, and its fragmentation and degradation, are important in creating the impact of the photographs, but also in sterilizing the image. To see the graphic photo once leaves the viewer distraught and shaken – but to see that photograph reproduced over and over again undermines the image’s energy because the scene of horror becomes another mass-market picture.
