Why Taylor Swift kicked off The Eras Tour with a donation to the Arizona Food Bank Network

When Taylor Swift kicked off her historic The Eras Tour on Friday, March 17 to a sold-out crowd at State Farm Stadium, the city of Glendale welcomed her with a temporary name change and a number of pop-up events and dining specials dedicated to the singer.

Swift returned the warm welcome with a generous donation to the Arizona Food Bank Network before her tour’s opening night.

“It’s not every day that you get a call from someone who works in PR for Taylor Swift, so we were dubious at first, but happily, it turned out to be absolutely real,” said Terri Shoemaker, Vice President of External Relations at the Arizona Food Bank Network.

Shoemaker said Swift’s PR agent had told her that Swift planned to make a positive impact in the communities where she was touring, beginning with Arizona’s food banks.

Taylor Swift’s donation helps highlight the problem of hunger in Arizona and beyond

One in nine people and one in six children in Arizona struggle with food insecurity, according to Shoemaker. She said donations from Swift and others went directly toward securing more supplies and better food for those who rely on food banks across the state, as well as toward getting information out to people in need who might not know about the food bank network.

“Donations like this from very high-profile people like Taylor Swift help denote that hunger is still a problem in the US. It’s here and it’s a problem across the country,” Shoemaker said. “The recognition of that is so important, and so is just setting an example of how to support organizations in the community that are doing everything they can to help fight hunger and help support people who might not know where their next meal is coming from. “

The Arizona Food Bank Network supports five regional food banks, four warehouses and an additional thousand member agencies across the state. Food banks provide food and other support to food pantries that in turn support members of their communities with food boxes and hot meals.
